Big Pink Volleyball Fundraiser Benefits Waterford Place
Waubonsee Community College students put the fun in fundraiser with their Big Pink Volleyball Fundraiser on October 11 and raised nearly $500 for Waterford Place. Organized by a group of students from the college, this event – now in its third year – was attended by more than 90 students, faculty and staff members who raised funds for Waterford Place by playing volleyball with a huge pink ball.
“We absolutely love raising money for Waterford Place and encouraging our students to think long-term about their civic responsibility,” said Waubonsee Student Life Coordinator Kady Halbmaier. “Waterford has a special place in our hearts, not only because we host this event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month but also because we work with and have connections with people who have been impacted and helped by Waterford Place. It’s like everything is coming full circle for us and I love for our students to be able to find this connection as well.”
As the beneficiary of the event, Waterford Place was invited to send representatives to speak. Thelma Razo, MSW, bilingual breast cancer support specialist at Waterford Place, spoke briefly about what the center does. Waterford participants Maria Trujillo and Barbara Cooper discussed their experiences with cancer and described how Waterford Place benefited them during their cancer journeys.
Funded entirely through philanthropy, Waterford Place offers programs and services at no charge to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. Programs and services include support programs such as short-term counseling and support groups, complementary therapies such as oncology massage and facials, wellness classes including yoga and cooking demonstrations, stress management programs and free seminars on managing treatment-related side effects and other topics.
