Lynn Barclay Big Heart Family Fund
The Lynn Barclay Big Heart Family Fund, established in 2015, provides health and safety equipment like car seats, thermometers and play yards to our neediest young patients and their families. Spearheaded by Rush Copley Pediatrics and Family Medicine in Oswego, the Fund also partners with Reach Out and Read, an evidence-based nonprofit organization. The practice’s physicians and staff promote early literacy and school readiness in the pediatric office by providing a free book on every visit from 6-months through 5 years of age.
Studies have shown that one of the most important things parents can do to positively influence a child’s development is to spend quiet time reading together. Not only does this activity lay the groundwork for things like improved concentration, cognition and imagination, it helps create a strong sense of trust and intimacy as essential to a child’s well-being as check-ups and immunizations.
Support for the creation of this fund coalesced around the retirement of Lynn Barclay, who had been a pediatric nurse in this practice for over 35 years. Dr. Keller had identified many patients’ need for assistance, and she and her colleagues felt inspired by Lynn's kindness, generosity and positive attitude to launch the fund.
One of the hundreds of families that has benefited from the Fund will attend the Little Seeds Become Mighty Trees gala on May 3, 2019, to share their story. Stacy and Chris Skinner have been patients of Rush Copley Pediatrics and Family Medicine ever since their triplets were discharged from Rush Copley’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 2003. Stacy tells how much her children look forward to receiving a book at each visit to the doctor’s office. According to Stacy, “Not every family is able to buy as many books for their children as they would like, and it turns a doctor’s appointment from something that can be a little bit scary into something exciting.” Stacy and her husband read to the children every night at bedtime, if possible, and appreciate the special bonding time it provides.
The Lynn Barclay Big Heart Family Fund operates completely on contributions. Find out how you can help by supporting our annual gala event Little Seeds Become Mighty Trees.
