Tips for Sheltering in Place
As shelter-in-place continues, remember these tips to help you through the next weeks. We will get through this – together.
Keep busy. Read, exercise, go for a walk, challenge your brain with a puzzle – crossword or jigsaw, try a new recipe, or tackle that project you’ve been putting off.
Relax. You want to keep your mind and body busy, but make some time for relaxation as well. You may be busier than ever if you’re working and have kids at home. Take some time to relax, if you can.
Be positive. Focus on the positive things in your life and on things that make you smile. Watch a funny movie, meditate or make a gratitude list. Play some music and sing or dance.
Fight loneliness. If you are feeling lonely, there’s no better cure than to help someone else. Now is a great time to check on friends or relatives who may be alone. Pick up the phone and call or text that friend or family member, or send an email. It will be good for both of you.
Get enough rest. This is a great time to work on adjusting your sleep patterns to get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night. You may even be able to add in a nap or two.
Eat right. Make healthy meals with plenty of greens and vegetables – frozen or canned work if you don’t have fresh on hand. Snack on fruit, carrots, nuts, yogurt, granola bars or trail mix.
Stay fit. Create a routine that includes exercise, and take advantage of the many free yoga and exercise classes now available online.
Do something fun. Encourage your neighbors to participate in a nightly sing-along or howl. Many neighborhoods across the country are now doing this daily at 8 p.m., joining in together from their balconies, windows or front porches.
Protect yourself. Stay home and wash your hands often. If you do have to go out, wear a mask and practice social distancing.
