Rush Hospitals Again Receive Top Grades for Patient Safety

Two Rush University System for Health (RUSH) hospitals again were rated among the best in the country for safety in the latest grades awarded by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog organization. Rush Copley Medical Center and Rush Oak Park Hospital both received A grades, the highest possible.

Leapfrog announced the latest of its twice-yearly safety grades this month, rating more than 2,600 hospitals in the United States for their commitment to reducing errors, infections, and accidents that can harm patients.

Rush Copley is one of only 32 hospitals in the country to earn the top grade in every score release since Leapfrog began rating hospitals on safety in 2012. Rush Copley now has a total of 17 A’s.

"We are pleased to be recognized once again by Leapfrog for our strong culture of safety,” said John Diederich, president and CEO of Rush Copley. “Our staff is dedicated to providing care with the highest standards of safety and compassion to our patients.”

Rush Oak Park Hospital received its eighth consecutive A grade and its tenth overall.

Measure of Hospital Safety

Leapfrog used 28 measures of publicly available hospital data to assign scores of A, B, C, D or F. The score represents each hospital's overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections while they are in the hospital.

The Leapfrog Group compiles the Hospital Safety Score under the guidance of the nation's leading experts on patient safety in order to provide the public with information they can use to protect themselves and their families. A full analysis of the data and methodology used is available on the Hospital Safety Score website.

“As the nation copes with a challenging pandemic, our gratitude extends to hospital leadership and health care workers everywhere for their tremendous dedication,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of the Leapfrog Group. “We hope this A helps to thank the people who work and volunteer for Rush Copley. They are role models in putting patients first, and their service has been extraordinary in our country’s time of need.”
