The Gentle Cesarean: New Birth Option for Moms-to-Be at Rush-Copley
(Aurora, IL) – For women whose physicians find it medically necessary to have a cesarean section, or c-section, the surgical procedure can distract from those first celebratory moments of welcoming a new baby. Now, obstetricians at Rush Copley are offering a way to make a C-section more family-centered with a new method of delivery called the “Gentle C-section.”
During a typical C-section, a mother’s abdomen is covered with a solid colored drape during the procedure. During a Gentle C-section, doctors switch the traditional solid drape for the clear one to allow patients to see the baby being born.
Teressa Alexander, M.D., OBGYN, the first physician to use the method at Rush-Copley, says the goal of the Gentle C-section is to make the delivery as natural as possible.
“The Gentle C-section allows moms and babies to bond more quickly,” said
Dr. Alexander. “Patients feel more connected to what is happening during the birth and both mom and baby benefit from it.”
Binu George, a mom from Oswego, was one of the first patients at Rush Copley to have the Gentle C-section when she gave birth to her daughter Vidya in June. George, who had her first child via traditional C-section says that this time was much different for her and husband James to be able to see their baby being born.
“It was awesome to see her right away and see her first cry,” said George. “I was able to touch her as she was coming out of the womb.”
George says that after the experience she would recommend this method to anyone who needs to have a C-section.
