Cancer Screening Recommendations
Cancer can be detected early by conducting regular screenings. Survival rates of cancers detected early are significantly higher than those caught at a later stage.
Beginning at age 18+
- Women: Annual pap smears and pelvic exam
Beginning at age 20+
- Women: monthly breast self-exam, annual clinical breast exam, annual pap smear and pelvic exam, skin exam every 3 years
- Men: Skin exam every 3 years
Beginning at age 40+
- Women: monthly breast self-exam, annual clinical breast exam, annual pap smear and pelvic exam, annual skin exam
- Men: annual skin exam
Beginning at age 50+
- Women: monthly breast self-exam, annual clinical breast exam, annual pap smear and pelvic exam, annual skin exam, annual fecal occult blood test, colonoscopy every 10 years
- Men: annual skin exam, annual fecal occult blood test, colonoscopy every 10 years, annual prostate-specific antigen blood test and digital rectal exam.
Note: Those people who are at higher risk for specific cancers, such as a personal or family history or are of a race at high risk, should begin screening at an earlier age and/or undergo screening more often. Consult your physician for a screening schedule that is right for you.
