Deborah Brunelle, R.N.

The greatest challenge nurses face is the future shortage of nurses. We also have an aging population of nurses that we need to be aware of and address. The needs of the older nurse are much different than that of younger one.

Why did you choose nursing as a career?

Truthfully I always wanted to be a Veterinarian.  Then I started candy stripping at a local hospital and met this wonderful nurse Marilyn.  She really loved what she did and was a wonderful teacher.  I started thinking about veterinarian and nursing schools.  I met another nurse who also encouraged me to go into nursing.  I did and I love it.  I have been a nurse for 28 years and could not imagine doing anything else.

What makes nursing at Rush-Copley so special?

The people. I have only been here for a year but it is obvious that Rush Copley nurses put their patients first.  They are very highly trained and committed to bringing the best possible care to the bedside.

What is your favorite aspect of nursing?

Aside from knowing that I can make a difference in someone's life, my favorite aspect is the variety.  I know that each day will bring new challenges and learnings.

Do you have any advice for those interested in a nursing career?

Make sure nursing is what you want to do.  Shadow a nurse, volunteer or work in some capacity in the medical field before beginning a nursing program.

Is there a moment in your service at Rush-Copley that stands out in your mind?

I had spoke with a particular family on the phone several times assisting them locate resources.  Several weeks later, they came in to visit me.  It was wonderful to see the progress they had made.
