Judi Bonomi, R.N., M.S., OCN

I chose nursing because I was influenced by a neighbor growing up, who helped to soothe my ouchies and let me watch her do things to fix up her six children and their ouchies.  She wore a crunchy white starched skirt and the white cap and white shoes to work which must have left me with a significant impression of a great career.

What makes nursing at Rush-Copley so special?

I have always felt that I could grow with the organization, and within Nursing, I could explore and expand my nursing knowledge.  I see how caring and dedicated my colleagues are and that  makes me view our organization as very connected and therefore, special.

What’s the greatest challenge nurses face today?

Time.  The time to complete all they have to do, ensuring that patient safety needs and comprehensive physical needs are met.  Other challenges include the nursing shortage looming on the horizon, more complex needs of patients and the continuous need for learning.

What is your favorite aspect of nursing?

My favorite aspect of nursing would have to be being with nurses and patients, and helping others.

Do you have any advice for those interested in a nursing career?

Go for it!  I cannot think of anything else I would rather do.  It is my passion and it has so many rewards!

Is there a moment in your service at Rush-Copley that stands out in your mind?

There are so many moments that stand out.  Memories that I remember include images with patients who have left a special mark on my heart and mind; patients who lost their battle with their illness and those they left behind; nurses who were my mentors and support; the joy of seeing nurses offering a special hug or conversation with a patient -  that is the essence of nursing.
