New Mammography Technology Goes Digital
Rush-Copley offers patients the latest in digital mammography. Digital mammography provides improved accuracy in diagnosing abnormal tissues/cancers in women under 50, faster exam times, quick viewing of images and improved contrast over traditional film mammography.
A mammogram is a special type of X-ray procedure that can detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, before you - or even a skilled healthcare professional - can feel a lump. Along with a regular breast self examination (BSE), a mammogram is one of the most important parts of your personal healthcare routine.
If you have been avoiding getting a mammogram, the Women's Diagnostic Center offers you a comfortable way to take charge of your breast health. In fact, you can't get a quicker, more accurate mammogram - in a warm, caring environment.
When it is time for your mammogram, you will have a private room, a locker to secure your belongings and a warm spa robe to wear during the test.
Rush-Copley is the only hospital in the Fox Valley area that can promise you mammogram results within one hour.
Tips for a Good Mammogram:
- Plan your mammogram for a time of the month when your breasts will be least tender. Try to avoid the week before your period.
- Don't wear talcum powder or deodorant on the day of you mammogram because these substances might show up as shadows on the x-rays, requiring repeat images.
- If you've had mammograms done at another center, be sure to bring your previous mammogram films with you so they can be compared to the new ones. If this is not done, an immediate report might not be possible.
- Continue to have your mammograms done at the same center if possible so that your films can be compared from year to year.

Bone Densitometry
Bone Densitometry is an examination of the lower spine and hip to measure the thickness or density of the bones. The complete procedure takes approximately ten minutes and involves no pain, needles or tunnels. A radiologist interprets the results and a report is faxed to your physician within 24 hours (the results are also mailed to you within three business days). A physician referral is required.
