Special Practices & Procedures

  • A hospitalist is an internal medicine physician specifically trained in managing complex medical issues and specializes in treating the unique needs of hospitalized patients. The internists may also have advanced training in areas such as critical care or pulmonary medicine. Hospitalists work closely with primary care physicians and communicate frequently to ensure that he/she is aware of the patient’s condition. Hospitalists do not have an office practice. Their day is focused only on patients in the hospital so that complications and other needs can be quickly addressed. When the patient is discharged, the hospitalist will direct the patient back to their primary care physician. Often a patient’s hospital care requires consultation from several different specialists. Hospitalists assist in coordinating all of these specialists and keep the patient and their family informed. By using a hospitalist, a primary care physician has more time to dedicate to a patient’s office visits.
