Aurora, IL – Waterford Place Cancer Resource Center will be able to better serve cancer patients and survivors thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley.
The recently awarded $25,000 grant will underwrite a wireless interpretation system that provides simultaneous interpretation for community education presenters. The system allows any interpreter to hear a presenter and speak quietly into a microphone, with the translations being transmitted to headphones worn by the Spanish-speaking attendees.
“For the most part, Spanish-speaking participants only enrolled in programs we offered in Spanish like the breast cancer support group and yoga class,” said Kelly Huggins, Program Development and Operations Manager at Waterford Place. “This new system generously supported by the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley will enable Spanish speakers to take advantage of many additional programs we currently offer in English.”
In some cases, cancer patients do not feel well enough to come to Waterford Place at a specific time and date to participate in programs. In order to make Waterford Place’s programs available to as many people as possible, the grant will also support video and audio equipment to record cooking demonstrations, lectures and workshops for later viewing via Rush Copley’s closed-circuit television channels or YouTube.
Waterford Place Cancer Resource Center provides supportive services and support, free of charge, to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. The center offers an array of programs such as information and education classes, yoga, cooking demonstrations, support groups, family programs, complementary therapies, salon and spa which is home to the area’s largest American Cancer Society’s Wig Boutique. Waterford Place is located at 1310 Waterford Drive, near the intersection of Route 34 and Waterford Drive, adjacent to Rush Copley Medical Center.
